Auty edges Tully in Henderson Insurance Trophy
04/06/07

Josh Auty (pictured) pipped his Lincs FM Scorpions’ team mate Andrew Tully by less half a bike length to win the Henderson Insurance Trophy at the Scunthorpe Raceway yesterday afternoon. The pair produced some fantastic racing as they battled for supremacy all afternoon. Tully won two of their three battles during the qualifying heats but it was the 16-year old from West Yorkshire who won when it mattered to take the title.

Also impressing during the meeting were Scorpions’ reserve Joe Haines and Cleveland’s Greg Blair. Both riders only rode a few meetings last year but they are making great strides in their first full season and certainly two of the hottest prospects in British speedway. Haines won three of his four qualifying races and broke sixty seconds for the first time around his home track. He recorded 59.56 in heat 5 whilst Blair scored nine points in qualifying and just missed out on breaking sixty seconds when he won heat 8.

Scorpions Scott Richardson and Byron Bekker along with Boston’s Simon Lambert and Cleveland’s Rusty Hodgson also made the semi-finals but Richardson and Blair tangled going into the first bend of the first semi-final and Richardson sustained an injured shoulder. Unable to take his place in the re-run Jonathan Bethell took his place and took advantage of his good fortune to make the final. However, his luck ran out in the final when a puncture on the last lap denied him of third place.

The day was not a happy one for the Scorpions’ captain Richie Dennis or Scott Anderson. Dennis had bike trouble all afternoon and failed to make the start of two races. He had an engine failure in another and had to start the only race he finished from the fifteen metre mark after he failed to make the initial two minute allowance. Anderson, who had done so well for the side at Plymouth on Friday had problems with his clutch on one bike and blew his engine on his spare.

The Lincs FM Scorpions are in action at the Scunthorpe Raceway next Sunday, 10th June (start time), when they face Rye House in the first leg of the Quarter-Final of the Knockout Cup. The team will be hoping to win, and preferably win well, as they take a depleted side down to Rye House for the second leg whilst the Raiders have added Karlis Ezergailis to their line-up and may be also be adding Luke Bowen to an already strong side.

Henderson Insurance Trophy results:
Final places: 1st Josh Auty, 2nd Andrew Tully, 3rd Byron Bekker, 4th Jonathan Bethell

Qualifying scorers: Andrew Tully 11, Joe Haines 10, Josh Auty 10, Greg Blair 9, Scott Richardson 7, Simon Lambert 5, Byron Bekker 5, Rusty Hodgson 4, Jonathan Bethell 4, Jack Roberts 2, Richie Dennis 1, Scott Anderson 1

Scunny Win Fours title in dramatic finish
18/05/07

Tonight the Lincs FM Scunthorpe Scorpions won the Conference League Fours title after a dramatic tussle with the Plymouth Devils. The meeting, which involved eight Conference League teams, was held at the Devon club’s track and after both teams had won their semi-finals they locked horns in the eight-heat final. The meeting went one way and then the other until the two sides were tied with one race to go.

In that race the Scorpions had Byron Bekker against the previously unbeaten Nicki Glanz. Buxton’s Jack Roberts and Weymouth’s Karl Mason were also in the race but all eyes were on Bekker and Glanz. Scunthorpe’s South African star led from the tapes but Plymouth’s Dane was pressing hard. Entering the second lap and Glanz went for a pass down the inside. It was a strong move and Bekker fell. Stuart Wilson, the referee, had no doubts about the decision and immediately put Glanz’s blue exclusion light on.

The race was re-run and Byron Bekker just had to complete four laps to record the point that would secure the title for the Scorpions. He won the race in style and the Scorpions had won the only major Conference League title that had eluded them during the historic 2006 season.

The semi-final, against Sittingbourne, Oxford and Buxton had been won at a canter. Josh Auty, Byron Bekker and Tai Woffinden won the six races they were involved in with Woffinden claiming the St.Boniface Arena track record for good measure in the third race of the night. He lowered it to 51.07 beating the previous best of 51.22 held jointly by Jason Bunyan (Isle of Wight) and Steve Boxall (Rye House). On a track that heavily favours the inside gate positions Richie Dennis failed to catch Buxton’s Jack Roberts when off the outside gate before engine problems took him from first to last in his second ride.

In the second semi-final Plymouth dropped just two points from their eight races and looked like slight favourites going into the final. The opening race of the final, which also included Weymouth and Buxton, saw the classiest rider of the night, Tai Woffinden win but Plymouth’s Tom Brown claimed second place. Heat 2 looked like it might have gone a long way to deciding the winners when Plymouth’s Adam Roynon won the race but Byron Bekker finished last. That put the Devils two points up and it became three when Nicki Glanz defeated Josh Auty in the next race.

Plymouth’s Seemond Stephens had once been unbeatable around his own track but he missed the gate in heat four and lay last for a while. At the front Richie Dennis had put his mechanical gremlins behind him and became a rare winner from the outside gate. Stephens made it into third but the Scorpions had closed the gap to just one.

Stephens was defeated again in heat five, this time by Woffinden, before Dennis put the Scorpions into the lead by defeating Tom Brown in the sixth race. However, the lead looked fragile after Adam Roynon had defeated josh Auty it had gone. The race had it’s own controversy when it was awarded after just two laps after Buxton’s Lewis Dallaway had fallen at the back. The Scorpions expects a re-run but the race was declared and it came down to the showdown between Byron Bekker and Nicki Glanz.

The tension and drama had reached fever pitch by the end but the Scorpions’ 19-year old South African held his nerve to ensure the trophy will paraded at the Scunthorpe Raceway on Sunday afternoon (start time) when the Stoke Spitfires are the visitors.

Before then the team face the Weymouth Wildcats tonight (start time 7.15pm).

ROARING BACK
30/03/07

By Martin Neal, Evening Gazette ~ Friday 30th March 2007

Back on track - Redcar Bears put memories of their two away defeats firmly behind them last night to inflict a heavy 58-35 defeat on Berwick Bandits. It was the perfect start to their Premier Trophy campaign and they will be looking to continue that form at Edinburgh this evening.

It was an excellent all-round team performance by the Bears, for whom every rider won at least once. Boss Brian Havelock had talked earlier this month of getting some good home performances on the board to strike fear into the hearts of their visitors - and they certainly did that last night at South Tees Motorsports Park.

Mat Tresarrieu clearly benefited from a midweek meeting with boss Brian Havelock, in the wake of his dismal night at Newcastle on Sunday. He was beaten only once by an opponent in five rides - and that was in the nominated riders' race. Jamie Courtney also looked far more comfortable. His seven-point total would surely have been more but for not one but two jump starts in heat 11. Gary Havelock and Chris Kerr maintained their impressive early season form, while James Grieves was unbeaten by an opponent in every race he finished - a puncture in heat five denying him the chance of a paid maximum.

Dan Giffard admitted that he was "sore" after riding with a hairline fracture of the coccyx, while young Josh Auty had a stunning debut at reserve. The youngster looked stylish, determined, and every bit a champion in the making. He went through the tapes at the start of heat four but quickly made up ground and was so close to picking up a point.

"We've got back on track," said team boss Havelock whose team were in control from the moment Courtney and Auty scored a second race 5-1 - the first of seven maximum heat advantages by the Bears. "Obviously the problems we had in our two away meetings have been ironed out and I am pleased with the result. Everybody knuckled in - we had a couple of problems with tyres but we'll have to get over the regulations a different way. Josh looked sharp and showed he's got plenty of bottle, while Matty came more prepared and had a cracking meeting."

Rusty Hodgson is restored to the team at Edinburgh tonight under the Bears' early season reserve rotation policy. And although getting a win against a strong-looking Monarchs side will be a tall order, Havelock is hopeful of a good result - especially as winter signing Grieves is known as something of an Armadale track expert. "Rusty has never been to the place before," Havelock said, "but the rest of our lads have. It's usually a reasonably well prepared track and we should have a good meeting. Kevin Little used to know his way around the place and James has taken his place, so I'm glad to hear he usually goes well there. Edinburgh look fairly strong this year and have proved that with a couple of decent scores, so we'll be looking to run them as close as we can."

Bears: Gary Havelock 12+2, Mat Tresarrieu 12+1, Chris Kerr 8+2, James Grieves 8+1, Josh Auty 7+1, Jamie Courtney 7, Dan Giffard 4+1.

Bandits: Andreas Bergstrom 10+3, Michal Makovsky 7, Stanislaw Burza 7, Michael Coles 5, Jacek Rempala 3, Jon Branney 2+1, Benji Compton 1.

Auty’s team mate Tai Woffinden also had an impressive weekend when he scored a paid maximum on his debut for the Rye House Rockets in the Premier League. His points were hard won and included passes of Redcar heat-leaders James Grieves and Matt Tresarrieu.
